Preventing mother-to-child transmission of syphilis through testing and treatment
CURRENT OR PREDICTED IMPACT:
-
150,000 - 300,000 DALYs averted in the first country, Philippines
COST-EFFECTIVENESS:
-
Potentially below 80 USD / DALY
SIGNIFICANT UPDATES:
-
HFG conducted 2 months of country scoping visits in Tanzania and the Philippines
-
They are prioritising the Philippines, as only 20% of pregnant women are screened for syphilis, compared to 65% in Tanzania. Hence, they expect a higher (counterfactual) impact in the Philippines.
-
There is a significant burden of antenatal syphilis in the Philippines, with HFG estimates indicating between 10,000 to 50,000 cases each year of mother-to-child transmission of syphilis. This is between 0.5% and 2.5% of the global disease burden (WHO, 2016).
-
Currently, HFG is working with the Department of Health in designing a pilot of dual HIV/syphilis testing for pregnant women, as a precursor for a nationwide roll-out.
-
HFG second priority is scoping out the potential impact organization can have in supporting Zanzibar (Tanzania) in bridging the current funding and supply gap of dual HIV/syphilis tests until March 2024.
-
Third, HFG will research the feasibility of working on dual testing in the DRC, since its high burden of syphilis makes it a promising option to achieve scale in the long term.
ACHIEVEMENTS:
-
HFG met with +25 stakeholders in both the Philippines and Tanzania. Stakeholders included department heads of the ministries of health, global organizations such as WHO and UNICEF, and local NGOs working on maternal health.
-
They visited +8 healthcare centres in each country to interview healthcare staff, lab technicians, and a few patients in order to understand the situation “on the ground.”
-
The Philippines’ Department of Health has asked HFG to design and run a pilot of their intervention
-
HFG has also received data on the scale of the problem that they most likely couldn’t have accessed without being there
-
HFG identified around 3 potential high-quality hires and organizations that could support the organization in the Philippines.

ROOM FOR MORE FUNDING IN 2023:
-
We are currently not seeking additional funds. We first want to claim major wins, such as, kicking off and receiving results from a pilot study. Fundraising will become important once scale, tractability and neglectedness are more strongly confirmed.
